Newly elected NAFI Treasurer Greg Bork is leading three grant-funded projects for the Aquarius Archives over the coming months.
Building skills, and a paper in Canberra
Greg is now in Sydney, embarking on a Museums and Galleries NSW-funded Volunteer Placement with Museums of History NSW to build skills across all aspects of collections management. While down south, he will present a paper on the Aquarius Archives at the AMaGA (Australian Museums and Galleries Association) National Conference in Canberra on 5 November.
A new Nimbin Museum? Strategic Planning meeting, 20 November
On 20 November, the Aquarius Archives invites all interested stakeholders to the first of their Strategic Planning meetings, from 2–3pm in the Comskool room at the Nimbin Community Centre, followed by tea and questions. See the event listing. Consultant Dr Kate Gahan will be exploring the possibilities for a new Nimbin Museum — if that’s what the community wants. Strategic planning is funded with a grant from Museums and Galleries NSW.
Preservation Needs Assessment, from 18 December
On 18 December, consultants Erika and Molly will arrive in Nimbin for the first of two on-site days to prepare a Preservation Needs Assessment of all Aquarius Archives collections, with grant funding from the National Library of Australia. If you are the custodian of archives that you may one day donate to Aquarius Archives, now is the time to contact mail@aquariusarchives.org.au to request inclusion in the current assessment.
Donations welcome
While grant funding is marvellous, it does not provide for operational costs or discretionary funding. Aquarius Archives relies on donations from the community, and with its Deductible Gift Recipient status, your donation of $2 or more is tax-deductible.
Wanted: a new home for the Archives
Aquarius Archives is seeking a new home. Many historical societies around Australia either own their own building or pay a peppercorn rent. In the short term, they are asking the community for a no-rent space to keep going, please. In the long term, they are applying for the Homes Reuse Program for a building, but they need a site to put it on. Please contact Aquarius Archives as soon as possible if you can provide a secure, long-term site for their new home.
You can visit the Aquarius Archives on Fridays at the Community Centre until the end of the year, when their current lease ends.
